'Dores take on Villanova Saturday

Vanderbilt Gamenotes The Commodores' men's basketball team returns to the confines of Memorial Gym for the first time in three weeks when Vanderbilt takes on Villanova as a part of the SEC/Big East Challenge on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2, and the action can be heard live on the Vanderbilt Radio Network from IMG College in middle Tennessee or online at vucommodores.com. Game/Media Information Series Information Only Meeting The only time the two teams met on the basketball floor is in the finals of the 1994 NIT Tournament at Madison Square Garden, a game Villanova won, 80-73. Frank Seckar paced the Vanderbilt effort that night with 30 points. Scoring Increases The Commodores’ two leading scorers this season have seen much more playing time and have seen their scoring averages from a year ago increase as well. Kedren Johnson averaged 14.5 minutes and 3.1 points per game last year, this season, 36.0 and 17.6, respectively. Kyle Fuller, 6.9 minutes and 0.9 ppg, this year, 36.4 min. and 12.8 ppg. Leading in Minutes Junior guard Kyle Fuller paces the SEC in minutes played with an average of 36.4 minutes played per game, with sophomore point guard Kedren Johnson is second behind Fuller at 36.0 minutes per contest. 33 Number of career starts for Vanderbilt’s starting five who started against UTEP. Record against Big East Vanderbilt’s record against the current members of the Big East Conference. The Commodores split two meetings with the league last year - losing in overtime in the Big East/SEC Invitiational, 62-60, at Louisville, and defeated Marquette in Milwaukee, 74-57. Vanderbilt has played every current member of the league except for Rutgers. Up Next The Commodores travel to Xavier for the back end of a home and home agreement on December 6, Vanderbilt’s last game before final exams. The game tips at 6:30 CT and will air on ESPNU. Last Time Out - Old Spice Classic The Commodores posted a record of 1-2 at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, dropping games to Davidson and Marist, and knocking off UTEP in the seventh place game…Vanderbilt fell to Davidson on Thursday, 75-62, despite a career high 28 points from sophomore guard Kedren Johnson, and fell to Marist on Friday, 50-33…The Commodores rebounded in the seventh-place game with a 73-49 win over UTEP on Sunday with three players in double figures - Johnson (17), Rod Odom (16), and Kyle Fuller (14), while also shooting 51% from the floor and 47.4% from three.
