Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings has announced the signing of 6'9 big man Damian Jones, of Baton Rouge, La., to a National Letter of Intent. Jones will be eligible to compete for the Commodores in the fall of 2013.
"We are extremely excited about Damian Jones, a guy that we targeted his junior year and made every effort to pursue and to sign," said Stallings. "We think he has a chance to be a superb college player and he give us an athletic presence around the goal that can be a difference maker. He's a skilled player, but his greatest strength is his athleticism and his ability to block shots and to rebound. We're very excited about him."
Jones, who attends Scotlandville Magnet High School in Baton Rouge, is regarded as one of the best big men in the class of 2013 and is a consensus top 100 prospect and top 10 big man by many recruiting services. Jones averaged eight points, eight rebounds, and four blocks per per game as a junior when his Scotlandville team won the 5A Louisiana state championship, and chose Vanderbilt over Oklahoma, Florida, Stanford, Georgia, and LSU.
"He comes from a great family, and we were very fortunate to get him on his visit due to Hurricane Isaac after his trip was delayed for more than 48 hours," said Stallings. "But, his mother and father made unbelievable efforts for him to get here. They are a terrific family and we're excited to have them."
Jones is an excellent student at Scotlandville Magnet, and is expected to study engineering at Vanderbilt.
