Odom named to All-SEC 2nd Team, Jones to All-Freshman Team

March 11, 2014

Vanderbilt senior forward Rod Odom was named to the All-SEC 2nd Team, while freshman Damian Jones was honored on the All-Freshman Team in an announcement made by the SEC Office Tuesday.

Odom and Jones become the 30th and 31st selections, respectively, to be honored an an All-SEC team member of the Kevin Stallings' era, while Odom's second-team honor is the program's 53rd second-team selection since 1949, and Jones becomes Vanderbilt's 12th selection on the All-Freshman team.

"Congratulations to both Rod and Damian," said Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings.  "We're really proud of what they were able to accomplish this year.  I know their teammates are really happy for them."

Odom heads into the SEC Tournament averaging a team-leading 13.6 points per game and has made three or more threes in a game on 13 occasions in 2013-14.  Odom has tallied double figures 20 times this year and has scored 20 or more points seven times.  He is sixth in the league in three-point field goal percentage (.387) and fourth in threes made (2.7), and earlier this year, Odom won the SEC Player of the Week for his performances against Tennessee and Arkansas, when he averaged 24.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in the two games.  Odom scored a career-high 26 points in home win over Tennessee, and posted the first two double-doubles of his career this year with a 20-point, 10-rebound game at Alabama and a 16-point, 12-rebound effort at Georgia.

"In Rod's case, this is a situation where a guy came in and didn't start for two years, and then waited his time, worked hard, and then it paid off," said Stallings.

Jones has had an outstanding freshman campaign, and is averaging 11.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest heading into the SEC Tournament this week. He has scored in double figures in 19 games this season, and has five double-doubles on the season, including the regular season finale at Ole Miss (11 points, 10 rebounds).  He won SEC Freshman of the Week when he averaged 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in games against Missouri and Auburn earlier this year.

"Damian had some great games and had a great year for a freshman," said Stallings.  "We're really excited about what the future holds for him and our program."

The Commodores will take on Mississippi State in the first round of the SEC Tournament on Wednesday night at approximately 8:30 p.m. CT.
