The seeds have been set for the 2012 SEC Tournament in New Orleans later this week, and Vanderbilt has claimed the number three seed and will take on the winner of Georgia-Mississippi State on Friday night at 9 p.m. CT at the New Orleans Arena.
After Florida's loss to Kentucky Sunday afternoon, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and the Gators all tied for second in the standings with a 10-6 league record, but the Volunteers claimed the tie breaker because they defeated Florida twice this season. Vanderbilt will be the three seed, Florida the four.
The Commodores are 5-1 all-time against Georgia at the SEC Tournament, and won the last meeting, 78-66, in the 2010 tournament in Nashville. Vanderbilt is 8-5 all-time against Mississippi State, and has played the Bulldogs in the last two tournaments - MSU knocked off Vanderbilt, 62-52, in the 2010 semifinals, and the Commodores defeated the Bulldogs, 87-81, in the quarterfinals of last year's tournament in Atlanta.
The Commodores swept two meetings with Georgia this season, and lost an overtime decision to Mississippi State at Memorial Gym in the teams' lone meeting this year.
Vanderbilt has a 32-49 overall record in the SEC Tournament - the Commodores went 2-1 at the 2011 tournament in Atlanta, defeating LSU, 62-50, in the first round, Mississippi State 87-81 in the quarterfinals, and then dropping a 77-66 decision to Florida in the semifinals. VU has reached the semifinals 11 times and the finals once. The lone trip to the finals resulted in Vanderbilt's only SEC Tournament Title, which came in 1951 with a 61-57 win over Kentucky.
