The Vanderbilt men's and women's basketball programs are heading abroad this summer on international tour trips, and they need your support. These trips will prepare the 2017-18 teams for their upcoming seasons, and provide a-once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience for these deserving student-athletes. With two new coaching staffs this initiative allows them to build on the critical team building process that was established in the first year of their tenures.
The women's team will head to Costa Rica August 12-19. The trip will include two stops: the first in the historic city of San Jose, followed by a stay at a beautiful Los Suenos resort. While abroad, the team will play two games versus international competition, and also have time to create lasting memories. San Jose will offer a unique opportunity to experience the vibrant culture and history of Costa Rica. Los Suenos, an ocean-side resort nestled between the Pacific Ocean and 1,100-acres of Costa Rican rainforest will provide breathtaking views and adventurous excursions.
"Traveling abroad is not only an opportunity for our team to play against some great competition, but to grow as players and individuals," women's head coach Stephanie White says. "The experience of learning about different cultures, serving local communities and bonding as a team is immeasurable."
"The amount of chemistry and togetherness that is built during a trip like this is vital to our basketball program," adds White. "We are excited about this opportunity to travel to Costa Rica and experience the growth that will come with it."
The men's team will travel to Italy August 12-19, visiting Rome, Florence, and Verona/ Lake Como. They will play three games during their stay versus international opponents. The trip will include opportunities to tour historical stops such as the Vatican, Colosseum, and Sistine Chapel, as well as take in the gorgeous views of Florence and Lake Como.
"This is a great advantage for our student-athletes," men's head coach Bryce Drew says. "Once every four years, we have the opportunity to take an international trip with our program. In this trip to Italy, we'll have a group of freshmen coming in who can grow with us right away as we experience a new culture, visit historic places and learn the area's history. Plus, we will get to play against a few talented basketball teams, which will give us a jump-start to the season."
Supporters and fans of both programs can help fund these trips by making a gift to the National Commodore Club (NCC). Gifts can be designated to the NCC Excellence Fund for Women's Basketball to support their Costa Rica excursion, or to the NCC Excellence Fund for Men's Basketball to support their adventure in Italy. A select number of spots are also available for supporters to travel with the team and participate in all team activities:
