VU takes out No. 1 UK, claims SEC title
NEW ORLEANS - Vanderbilt claimed its first postseason title since winning the 1990 NIT and first SEC Tournament championship since 1951 with a 71-64 victory over No. 1 Kentucky on Saturday.

A rematch of the 2012 SEC Tournament Championship awaits the Commodores on Thursday night at Memorial Gym when they open SEC play against the Kentucky Wildcats.  Tip off is set for 8 p.m., and the game can be seen live on ESPN and heard around the middle Tennessee area on the Vanderbilt IMG College Radio Network and online at vucommodores.com.

About Kentucky and the Series

  • Kentucky enters Thursday's contest with a 9-4 overall record.  Wildcat guard Archie Goodwin leads five UK players in double figures with 15.8 points per contest.  Center Nerlens Noel leads the team on the glass with 9.3 rebounds per game.
  • Vanderbilt is 6-3 against the Wildcats in the last nine meetings at Memorial Gym.
  • The two teams will meet for the 182nd time on Thursday, with the Wildcats holding a 136-45  series lead.  Vanderbilt is 24-35 against UK at Memorial Gym, and have played the Wildcats every season at Memorial Gym since 1953-54.  VU did not play UK in the first year the facility opened in 1952-53 campaign.
  • The last meeting between the two schools came in the SEC Tournament Championship in New Orleans in a game Vanderbilt won, 71-64.

Stallings Becomes Memorial Gym All-Time Wins Leader

Coach Stallings is now the all-time wins leader at Memorial Gym with 182 wins after last week's win over William and Mary.  Stallings surpassed Vanderbilt legend Roy Skinner for the all-time lead in wins at the legendary facility.

Commodores Rank Low In Experience

Vanderbilt's ranking among the 347 Division I basketball playing schools in terms of experience on the roster by kenpom.com. Kentucky is even less experienced with a ranking of 339.

'Dores Three-Point Streak Still Intact

Vanderbilt has made a 3-pointer in 844 consecutive games, a streak which began at the inception of the 3-point line in 1986-87. The Commodores rank second only to UNLV for the longest streak in Division I basketball.  Vanderbilt, UNLV and Princeton are the only three schools in college basketball to have made at least one 3-pointer in every game played since the 3-point line was implemented.

Seven is the magic number from last year - it is the number of top 31 2012 NBA Draft picks from Kentucky and Vanderbilt that were on the floor in the three meetings in 2011-12.

Sheldon Jeter Career High Vs. William and Mary

Freshman Sheldon Jeter scored a career-high 14 points in a career-best 21 minutes in Vanderbilt's 64-50 win over William and Mary on January 2nd.
