Metcalfe
METCALFE POSTS CAREER HIGH, AGAIN After registering a then-career-high 14 points against South Alabama in the Commodores' previous game, senior Alan Metcalfe topped his career mark in his second straight game with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 10 in the first half. The double-figure scoring games were also a first for Metcalfe, who had never scored more than nine points prior to Thursday. "It is a number of things as to why everything is coming together for me," Metcalfe said. "I'm getting a little bit more confidence each game now and the guys are knowing where to get me the ball."
DEFENSE LIMITS ANTHONY MORROW Anthony Morrow, Georgia Tech's leading scorer and the fourth-leading scorer in the ACC (18.7 points per game), was held to just 12 points, including 10 of which that were scored in the last 4:41 when the game was well beyond reach. Morrow was held scoreless in the first half due to foul trouble. Defending Morrow for the majority of the game was Shan Foster. "Guarding someone like that who gets the ball off quick, you try to limit his attempts and if you limit his attempts then it is kind of hard to make shots when you aren't taking any," Foster said.
KEY RUNS Holding a six-point edge, 19-13, with 11:38 to play, a three-pointer by VU's Jermaine Beal triggered a 9-0 run, giving Vanderbilt a 28-13 lead. Just as GT had cut Vanderilt's lead to 11 (33-22) with 6:08 to play, a three-pointer by Keegan Bell, sparked a scoring run that saw the Commodores outscore GT 18-9 to end the half. Vanderbilt ended up leading by as many 28 in the second half.
COMING OUT HOT Vanderbilt came out of the gate on fire in the first half by connecting on 65.4 percent (17-of-26) of its field-goal attempts and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) of its three-point attempts. The hot start enabled the Commodores to build as much as a 20-point edge in the first half. Vanderbilt also held Georgia Tech to just 11-of-29 shooting (37.9 percent) and 2-of-7 from beyond the arc in the first half.
BELL SCORES FIRST POINTS OF CAREER Freshman guard Keegan Bell scored the first points of his career with a three-pointer at the 5:48 mark of the first half. Bell finished the game with six points on 2-of-4 shooting, which were all three-point attempts. He had been 0-for-6 from the floor prior to today.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Shan Foster scored 17 points to lead Vanderbilt to a 92-79 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday.
The Commodores (7-0) shot 54.7 percent from the field and made 10 of 22 3-pointers.
Zack Peacock led Georgia Tech (3-4) with 17 points and Lewis Clinch added 15.
Yellow Jackets guard Anthony Morrow, who entered the game averaging a team-high 18.7 points, was held scoreless in the first half and finished with 12 points, which all came after the Commodores had built a comfortable lead.
A 3-pointer by Alex Gordon with 15:52 left in the second half gave Vanderbilt its largest lead at 62-40.
Moments later, Georgia Tech cut the lead to 64-48 on a basket by Jeremis Smith. Vanderbilt responded by going inside to Ogilvy, who scored five consecutive points to keep the Commodores ahead 69-49.
Vanderbilt led by 27 points three times in the final 7:11 before emptying its bench.
The Commodores shot 65.4 percent from the floor in the first half and raced to a 28-13 lead with 8:52 remaining before halftime.
The lead grew to 20 at 48-28 with 1:13 left in the half on a 3-pointer by Gordon. Metcalfe and Foster each scored 10 points in the first half.
Georgia Tech shot 37.9 percent from the floor in the first half. Morrow attempted only one shot in the first 20 minutes.
