Vanderbilt-Florida postgame quotes

Recap |  Box Score |  Notes |  AP Photos

Vanderbilt Head Coach Kevin Stallings

On Vanderbilt’s performance...
“We played OK at times and not so OK at other times, but we competed hard. We didn’t defend the 3-point line well enough, which usually started with dribble penetration.”

On Florida’s performance...
“They’re a good team. I thought they ran their offense well and really shot it in. We didn’t do a very good job of attacking their press and it was disruptive. We did a poor job with our spacing and our ball handling and it caused problems.”

Vanderbilt Players

Junior Guard John Jenkins

On the game...
"It was a tough battle. We tried to come in here to get a good start, but the press hurt us a lot. That was the main difference in the game.”

On going forward...
“We’ve just got to learn from it, look at the film and move.”

On Florida’s full-court pressure...
“It definitely made us think a lot. We had some turnovers in it.”

Senior Forward Jeffery Taylor

On the game...
"It was a tough game. We knew coming in that the crowd was going to be an important part of their game, but we couldn’t come out with a win.”

On Florida’s defense...
“(Florida) is good at rotating. We did a really poor job at handling the pressure. We had a lot of turnovers that resulted in easy points for them. We played really hard and competed, but they just made more shots than we did. Credit to them; they’re a really good team.”

Florida Head Coach Billy Donovan

On facing adversity...
“We went through a lot today and we got into a tough situation in the first half with Erik Murphy, Bradley Beal, and Patric Young each with two fouls. We got caught playing the last six or seven minutes of the first half with Scottie Wilbekin playing the power forward spot. To be up three (points) going into the half, I was really pleased. I thought our energy was waning a bit and I think it is tough to do the Thursday, Saturday (games) like we had to do. We were teetering to start the second half and had to encourage those guys to keep battling and I thought we did that.”

On using a full court press defense...
“When we put Patric in the starting lineup we decided to go back and play man-to-man to start the game. I have a lot of respect for Kevin (Stallings) and I knew he would be prepared so I think just coming out and pressing right away (wouldn’t work) so we waited to settle in. Once Will (Yeguete) got in the game at the 16 minute mark was when we started to press.”

Florida Players

Senior Guard Erving Walker

On playing with a small lineup...
“It was just guts. We know we are little and Vanderbilt is a great team. For those four minutes we were out there, I think we did a great job.”

On starting out well and then struggling with shooting...
“Teams make adjustments and play good defense. Vanderbilt is a good team. They are not just going to give us what we want. We know it is going to be a grind sometimes and we have to win the game even when the shots are not falling.”

Junior Guard Kenny Boynton

On the win...
“It was definitely good (to get the win). All home wins are good and this was one of the wins we really wanted. Overall, we did a great job as a team defensively. They came back at the end of the game, but we closed it out.”

On Florida’s defensive effort...
“(John) Jenkins is a great player. He is one of the best players in our league. I just wanted to come out and disrupt his rhythm. I think he made some tough shots in the game. We did a great job containing him.”
