VU Falls to Auburn 68-65 in SEC Opener

    Jan. 6, 2007

    IN THE KNOW

    Cage
Dan Cage may have come up just short on a last-second three-pointer that would have sent Saturday's game into overtime, but he still played an instrumental role in the Commodores' second half comeback. Trailing by as many as 12 points, VU made a furious rally behind a couple of big treys by the senior sharpshooter. Cage finished the night with a career-high 19 points and tied a personal best by making five three-pointers.

Vanderbilt lost their first game of the year when outrebounding their opponent. VU won the battle on the glass 43-31, highlighted by a season-high 17 offensive boards. Shan Foster's 10 rebounds matched a career best set earlier this year versus ETSU.

Neither team could miss from behind the arc with both clubs shooting right around fifty percent on the night. The Tigers connected on 14-of-28 three-pointers, while the Commodores knocked down 12-of-26 treys. Auburn's Rasheem Barrett led all players by going 6-of-9 from downtown.

AU's Korvotney Barber banked in two critical free throws late in the second half to help the Tigers pull out the win. Barber came into the game shooting only 45% from the line.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Rasheem Barret scored a game-high 22 points as Auburn held off Vanderbilt for a 68-65 victory in both teams' conference opener Saturday night.

Auburn (11-5, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) led 38-31 at the half. Josh Dollard and Korvotney Barber had 12 points each to round out the double-digit scoring for the Tigers.

Vanderbilt (10-5, 0-1) was led by Dan Cage with 19 points and Shan Foster added 14 for the Commodores.

It was a close game throughout with the lead changing eight times and eight tied scores.

Barber broke a 61-61 tie on a layup with 3:05 left to play and the Tigers never trailed again.

Vanderbilt pulled within one, 66-65, when Jermaine Beal made both free throws after being fouled by Barber. Beal's 3-point attempt to tie the score with four seconds left fell short.
