Muller named Ill. St. head coach

Twelve-year assistant to Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings named head coach at his alma mater.

2011-12: Dan Muller is a 12-year veteran of the Vanderbilt basketball program. Regarded as one of the top assistant coaches in the country, as the program's recruiting coordinator Muller has spearheaded the program's recruiting efforts since 2006. With Muller as the program's recruiting coordinator, Vanderbilt has seen the highest rated recruiting classes in the history of the program.

Since 2006, the Vanderbilt men's basketball program has cinched 4-Star recruits and Rivals 150 Prospects Jeffrey Taylor (2008); Lance Goulbourne (2008); Brad Tinsley (2008); Rod Odom (2010); Kedren Johnson (2011) and Dai Jon Parker (2011). In 2009, Vanderbilt signed 5-Star recruit John Jenkins, the nations leading high school scorer and a PARADE All-American and Reebok All-American.

During Muller's tenure, Vanderbilt has seen 6 players named to the SEC All-Freshman team, more than the previous total in school history; 18 players named to the All-SEC First and Second teams; 2 players named SEC Sixth Man of the Year; and a player named to the All-SEC Defensive Team three consecutive years (2010, 2011 and 2012). Prior to 2004, no Vanderbilt player had ever been named SEC Sixth Man of the Year, and prior to 2010 no Vanderbilt player had ever been named to the All-SEC Defensive Team.

Since Muller joined the Vanderbilt staff in 2000, the staff and team have accomplished seven 20-win seasons. Since 2003, Vanderbilt has been recognized nationally as a top 25 team in the AP Poll a total of 51 weeks. In 2007-2008, Vanderbilt was ranked in the AP Top 25 for the most consecutive weeks in school history.

Muller's efforts both on and off the court helped to propel the Commodores to Southeastern Conference Tournament Champions in 2012, the Commodores first conference tournament championship win since 1951. Of the 13 NCAA Tournament appearances in school history, 6 have come during Muller's tenure, including two Sweet 16 appearances. The Commodores have advanced to the NCAA Tournament 5 of the past 6 years.

Muller was named by FoxSports.com in its 2010-2011 rankings as one of the top 2 men's assistant basketball coaches in the Southeastern Conference as voted on by coaches in the league.

In addition to Muller's recruiting, scouting and on-court responsibilities, Muller directs player academics. Under Muller's watch, Vanderbilt has enjoyed a 100% senior graduation rate and one of the highest APR's in college basketball.

Prior to joining the Vanderbilt staff, Muller spent two years playing professionally including a stint with the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies.

Muller is no stranger to head coach Kevin Stallings after playing for him at Illinois State (1995-98). Muller helped the Redbirds to two regular season and Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championships and four postseason appearances, including trips to the NCAA Tournament in his final two seasons. Ranked eighth in career scoring, Muller posted career marks in four categories, while helping ISU to a 91-36 record during his stay. He also was a two-time MVC Defensive Player of the Year and was named the MVP of the MVC Tournament as a senior.

Off the court, Muller was just as successful. He was a two-time GTE Academic All-American and a recipient of the NCAA's Post-Graduate Scholarship. He also was named a Bone Scholar, the highest academic honor at ISU.

In 2003, Muller earned his MBA from the University of Florida.

He is married to Melissa Muller and has one stepson, Sib.
