Nashville, Tenn. - Cal State Fullerton held off Vanderbilt 10-8 Saturday afternoon to claim the first game of the DeMarini Fall Classic.
The Commodores battled back from an early 6-0 deficit to trail 10-8 with runners on second and third base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth before Anthony Gomez's check swing grounder back to the pitcher ended the game.
Fullerton drew first blood with a run in the first inning off Vandy starter Kevin Ziomek before adding four more runs in the second inning and chasing Ziomek after two frames. The Commodores scored their first run in the fourth inning when Conrad Gregor knocked in Tony Kemp, who led off with a double. The VU offense jumped back into the game in the fifth with five runs. Mike Yastrzemski's RBI-double and Gomez's RBI-single capped the rally. Gomez added another RBI-single in the seventh and freshman Chris Harvey crushed a solo home run over the left field scoreboard in the eighth. But the Titans scored in five of nine innings finishing the day with 12 hits to beat the Dores.
Gomez led Vanderbilt with two hits and two RBI with Riley Reynolds adding two hits as well. Joel McKeithan scored two runs and drew three walks on the afternoon. Greg Velazquez led Fullerton with three RBI going 2-for-5 while Austin Kingsolver added three hits, including a triple.
Titans' starter Dylan Floro picked up the win allowing one run on one hit over four innings. Ziomek took the loss giving up five runs, one earned, on four hits in two innings. Freshmen Philip Pfeifer and Brian Mller each had scoreless outings with Pfeifer turning in two scoreless and Miller one.
The two teams battle tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Hawkins Field. Left-hander Sam Selman gets the ball for VU against Fullerton's Kenny Mathews.
