D1Baseball.com has named Vanderbilt baseball as the number two program in the country in its bi-annual Top 100 rankings. The Vandy Boys trail only one team in the rankings -- fellow SEC East rival, Florida.
The rankings started in 2015 as the staff at D1Baseball.com has the ultimate goal of identifying the programs in the best shape in the current college baseball landscape, as well as keeping an eye on the next 5-10 years. The inaugural 2015 rankings had the Commodores in the top spot after a 2014 national championship and 2015 national runner-up finish. The Dores posted 43 wins in 2016 and went 36-25-1 last year before the season came to an end in another NCAA Super Regional.
D1Baseball.com says of Vanderbilt and head coach Tim Corbin: "Vandy players form a very special connection with each other and with head coach Tim Corbin, his family and his staff, because Corbin has created a true family culture that prizes serving others above serving oneself. He's also built an incredible on-field resume since taking over a program."
Since taking over the program in 2003, Corbin has led the Vandy Boys to 13 regionals, seven super regionals, and three appearances in the College World Series. 15 Commodores have been drafted in the first round under Corbin's watch, including pitcher Kyle Wright (5th overall, Atlanta Braves) and outfielder Jeren Kendall (23rd overall, Los Angeles Dodgers) in the 2017 MLB Draft.
Vanderbilt has won four NCAA Regional titles in the last five years and figures to field another talented squad in 2017. 22 returning letter winners are joined by a 17-man freshman class that has been tabbed as the best in the country by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball.
Vandy's fall ball training continues at Hawkins Field every Tuesday through Saturday until October 12 when the team's annual Black & Gold Series starts. Fans are welcome to attend any of the Commodores' fall practices outside of home football Saturdays (October 7). The team will be on the field at approximately 4:00 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and around 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays. Follow @VandyBaseball on twitter for updates.
