NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt ace right-hander Sonny Gray became the first player in school history to be named to the Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove Team announced on Wednesday.
Gray, who was also named to the Southeastern Conference All-Defensive team, played flawless defense in 26 opportunities with 10 putouts and 16 assists.
“The award speaks for itself and certainly justified,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. “I haven’t seen a college pitcher more impactful to his team because of his defensive abilities. Sonny is an outstanding pitcher, but this award separates him as the best defensive pitcher in the country. When he’s on the mound, he is a fifth infielder.”
In helping the Commodores (46-20) to their second ever NCAA Super Regional appearance, Gray earned second team All-SEC honors and finished the year with a 10-5 record and a 3.48 ERA. He struck out 113 batters in 108.2 innings and combined on three shutouts during the year.
Gray will be heading to the 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Trials set for July 5-11 at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. He made the team as a freshman last summer posting a 3-1 record with a 0.75 ERA in eight appearances.
The Smyrna native will be competing for a spot on the final 22-man roster that will be selected on Sunday, July 11. The team will then tour across the United States, with the summer season culminating on July 30-Aug. 7 at the FISU World University Baseball Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
