ON THE RUN Both teams will look to be on the run this weekend with Vanderbilt and Louisville having combined for 279 stolen bases. The Cardinals' 147 stolen base rank second in the nation with the Commodores' 132 steals ranking fourth. Vandy has five players that have at least 15 steals this season led by Tony Kemp's 32 (Conrad Gregor 21, Xavier Turner 20, Mike Yastrzemski 19, Jack Lupo 15). Louisville is led by Adam Engel's 40 steals and has four players with at least 21 on the season (Ty Young 26, Sutton Whiting 24, Coco Johnson 21).
THE ALL AMERICANS Three Commodores were named All-American last week by Collegiate Baseball led by first teamer Tony Kemp. Right-handers Tyler Beede (second team) and Brian Miller (third team) join Kemp on the squad. Kemp is the first Commodore to earn first team All-American honors since Sonny Gray (ABCA) and Jason Esposito (ABCA) in 2011. Carson Fulmer and Xavier Turner were tabbed Freshmen All-American by Collegiate Baseball this week.
THE COMMODORES AND CARDINALS The Commodores and Cardinals have developed quite a rivalry over the years playing every season since 2008, including twice in Regional play. Louisville topped the Dores in the Louisville Regional in 2009 and Vandy won the Louisville Regional in dramatic fashion - a walk-off safety squeeze bunt by Connor Harrell - in 2010. Earlier in the 2010 season, the two teams played an epic 17-inning, five-hour game that ended with Jason Esposito hitting a walk-off home run to give the Dores an 11-10 win. In 2011, the two teams dubbed their annual midweek showdown the Battle of the Barrel. VU has claimed both Barrels, including this season with a 10-2 victory at Louisville.
VANDERBILT IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT Vanderbilt makes its eighth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 12th appearance in school history. The Nashville Super Regional is the second in three years for Vanderbilt and fourth in school history (2011, 2010, 2004). The last time the Commodores advanced to the Super Regional round in 2011, the Commodores swept Oregon State to advance to Vandy's first College World Series. Vanderbilt is 32-24 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
