Four Vandy freshmen recognized

Vanderbilt matched a national-best as four players were named to the 2018 Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American team, the publication announced Wednesday.

Vandy’s Philip Clarke, Pat DeMarco, Mason Hickman and Austin Martin were recognized for their efforts this season, tying Auburn for the most in the country.

Clarke has appeared in 54 games including making 45 starts with 29 of the last 30 at designated hitter. The Franklin, Tenn., native is tied with Martin and DeMarco for the team lead with 18 multi-hit games and was named to the NCAA Clemson Regional All-Tournament Team.

In three starts at the Clemson Regional, Clarke batted .385 (5-for-13) with two home runs and three RBIs. The Christ Presbyterian Academy product has logged a hit in 26 of his last 34 games and reached base in 23 of his last 27 outings.

DeMarco is second on the team with 12 multi-RBI games and is one of two players to start all 59 games this season. The Staten Island, N.Y., product leads the squad in total bases (102) and is third in both hits (62) and RBIs (40).

Hickman has led the Commodores with an 8-2 record in 15 appearances and 12 stats. The right-hander and Sunday starter went 4-1 with the series on the line including being named SEC Freshman of the Week after tossing a complete-game shutout against LSU on March 25.

Martin has been a mainstay at the top of the order for Vandy and trails only JJ Bleday in batting average (.335) and on-base percentage (.447). The Jacksonville native was named to the NCAA Clemson Regional All-Tournament team after batting .385 (5-for-13) with four runs and an RBI.

Eight SEC teams boasted freshman all-America honorees with LSU adding three and Arkansas totaling two. Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Tennessee each had one honoree.
