Dores, Bulldogs set for SEC showdown
April 25, 2013
The Commodores went on the road and hammered #12 Louisville 10-2 to win the Battle of the Barrel for the second straight year. Zander Wiel and Vince Conde each went deep in support of Walker Buehler, who earned his third win. Vanderbilt clinched the team's 10th straight series of the season with a 5-1 win at Georgia on Sunday. Carson Fulmer earned his first career win and Brian Miller notched his 11th save of the season to tie the school record. The Commodores blasted a season-best five home runs en route to a 15-4 win over Georgia to split Saturday's doubleheader. Zander Wiel hit the first two home runs of his career, scored four runs and drove in five more in the victory. Vanderbilt dropped the series opener 3-1 at Georgia in the first game of a doubleheader. Kevin Ziomek was the tough-luck loser despite turning in his third complete game of the year.

THE X STREAK
Freshman Xavier Turner enters the weekend riding a 14-game hitting streak. Turner is hitting .344 (22-for-64) during the streak with 12 runs scored and 11 RBI. The Dores' hot corner has posted seven multi-hit games and stolen nine bases, including four two-steal games. His streak is the longest current streak on the team and the longest for a Vanderbilt freshman since Tony Kemp hit safely in 15 straight in 2011.
MILLER MOVING UP SAVES LISTS
With his two inning save at Georgia last Sunday Brian Miller moved into a three-way tie with Navery Moore (2011) and Ryan Rote (2004) for the most saves in a single season in Vanderbilt history. Miller now has 16 career saves leaving him three shy of Rote's all-time school record of 19. Miller has earned the save or a win in all but six of his team-best 22 appearances this season. His work this season has landed him on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award watch list. The award is given to the top relief pitcher in Division I each year.
STARS AND STRIPES
Team USA selected Tyler Beede for the Collegiate National Team this week. Beede becomes the 10th Commodore to compete for the Stars and Stripes and first since Sonny Gray and Jason Esposito in 2010. Beede joins Gray, Pedro Alvarez, Ryan Flaherty, Mike Minor, Ryan Mullins, David Price, Mark Prior and Casey Weathers as Commodores to wear the Red, White and Blue for the Collegiate team. Head Coach Tim Corbin led the 2006 squad to a gold medal in the World University Games and captured another gold medal in 2000 as an assistant coach.
SEC TITLE GAME REMATCH
Vanderbilt welcomes Mississippi State to Hawkins Field this weekend for a rematch of last season's Southeastern Conference Tournament Championship Game. The Bulldogs downed the Dores 3-0 in Hoover, Ala. to win the title after claiming the regular season series two games to one in Starkville, Miss. The Commodores are 37-56-2 against Mississippi State all-time in a series dating back to 1951.
