Vanderbilt utility player Austin Martin has been named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week after helping lift the Commodores' 3-1 finish highlighted by a series win against fifth-ranked Ole Miss.
The Jacksonville, Fla., native posted a .462 average and .588 on-base percentage in four games last week. Martin logged at least one hit in all four outings while extending his team-best hit streak to nine games.
After going 3-for-4 in Friday’s loss to the Rebels, Martin reached base three times, drove in a run and stole two bases while helping Vanderbilt to an 8-7, eight-inning walkoff win in the middle game.
The Trinity Christian Academy product becomes the third Commodore to receive SEC honors this season and second to be tabbed freshman of the week, joining Jayson Gonzalez who did so on March 12.
Martin leads the league with 15 stolen bases and ranks third in on-base percentage (.483). In 15 conference games, Martin has paced the Dores with a .327 average and .422 on-base percentage.
Vanderbilt closes its eight-game homestand on Tuesday, welcoming Evansville to Hawkins Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network Plus.
