ARKANSAS EDGES VANDERBILT 4-3
The Razorbacks take the series 2-1
NASHVILLE --- Danny Hamblin's grand-slam homer in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as Arkansas won 4-3 over Vanderbilt Sunday afternoon in front of a school-record 2,157 fans at Hawkins Field.
The Razorbacks claimed the season series to improve to 25-8 overall and 6-6 in SEC play, while the Commodores dropped their first conference series of the year to fall to 21-11 on the season and 8-4 in league action.
"The last two days were frustrating because we weren't able to bring runners home that were in scoring position," said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. "It's tough because there were two close games and we thought we could win the series, but Arkansas is a tough team."
The Commodores took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Shea Robin's homer to left field.
The Razorbacks followed with a shot of their own in the fifth when Danny Hamblin hit a two-out grand-slam homer to left off of starter Ty Davis.
Pedro Alvarez roped a RBI double to right-center in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Commodores had a couple of chances to even the score late in the game, but were unable to get the run home.
Davis (5-3) allowed four runs on four hits in 4.2 innings of work with two walks and three strikeouts in the losing effort.
Trey Holloway improved to 3-0 on the year after allowing three runs on five hits in six innings of work. Chris Roads pitched three scoreless innings to close out the game and record his third save of the year.
The Commodores will be back in action on Tuesday as Western Kentucky comes to town for a 6 p.m. matchup. VU will then face Lipscomb at Marsh Stadium at 4 p.m. on Wednesday before hosting Georgia next weekend.
