Commodore Notes
No. 24 Vanderbilt split the week going 2-2 with a win over Western Kentucky on Tuesday before dropping two-of-three on the road at No. 16 Ole Miss in the opening weekend of Southeastern Conference play… The Commodores used a career-best 5.1 innings from Chandler Day to beat the Hilltoppers at Hawkins Field 8-1… A five-run seventh inning put the game away as Ty Duvall collected three hits and drove in two runs in his first career start… Day earned his second win of the season, allowing one run on six hits… Vanderbilt dropped the SEC opener at Ole Miss 1-0 on Friday night in a pitcher’s duel… The Rebels scored the lone run of the game in the sixth inning off Vandy starter Kyle Wright, who took the loss despite giving up just one run on six hits over seven innings… The offense was held to a season-low three hits… The Dores used the long ball to even the series on Saturday in a 6-2 win, matching a season-best with three home runs… Jeren Kendall, Will Toffey and Stephen Scott all went long with Toffey and Scott going back-to-back in the three-run fourth inning… Scott’s solo homer was his first career home run… Jason Delay added a pair of two-out RBIs… Patrick Raby picked up the win, giving up two runs over six innings… The Commodores lost a late lead and the series on Sunday in a 10-8 loss… Ole Miss rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to clinch the series… The Dores used a season-high seven pitchers and walked a season-high seven batters… Penn Murfee took his first career loss, allowing two runs over 1.1 innings… Jeren Kendall scored three runs and collected three hits with JJ Bleday hitting his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the seventh inning that gave Vanderbilt the lead briefly… The Commodores return to Nashville for four games this week beginning on Wednesday in downtown at First Tennessee Park against Belmont before returning to Hawkins Field on Friday to begin a three-game series against No. 17 Texas A&M in the first SEC series at The Hawk this season.
