TIGERS COME TO TOWN FOR TOP 10 SHOWDOWN
For the first time since 2011, LSU comes to Nashville to take on the Commodores. The last time the Tigers visited Hawkins Field, Vanderbilt swept the series outscoring LSU 31-11 over the three games. The Dores also took the last series between the two teams in 2012 winning the final two games of the series in Baton Rouge. The Tigers own the last meeting between the two teams, however, with a 5-4 victory in 11 innings in an epic game in the SEC Tournament championship game last May. Vanderbilt has won the last five series between the two teams dating back to 2006.
The Vanderbilt bullpen has not been willing to give up much this season. The Dores' relievers have allowed only three runs on 28 hits over 62 innings (0.44 ERA) for the year with opponents hitting just .137. During the Commodores' nine-game winning streak the bullpen has not allowed a run spanning 28.1 innings while allowing only 10 hits (.111 BAA).
The Commodores collected eight doubles in last Friday night's win over Winthrop led by Dansby Swanson's Hawkins Field record three. The Dores have been taking the extra base during the team's nine-game winning streak with 20 as a team. Bryan Reynolds enters the week leading the SEC with nine doubles for the season, including five over the last nine games.
TURNER TURNING THE CORNER
Xavier Turner entered last week hitting .213 in the team's first 12 games and was in a 1-for-17 (.059) slump. But the sophomore has bounced back to go 11-for-22 (.500) with three doubles, five RBI, score four runs and steal three bases during the Dores' last six games. Turner has three multi-hit games during his six-game hitting streak, including a career-high four-hit game against Winthrop on Friday.
PITCHING... AND DEFENSE TOO
Vanderbilt's pitching has garnered much of the attention early in the season but the team's defense is off to an impressive start fielding .984 as a team. The Commodores have made just 11 errors on the season with the team's fielders committing just seven. The Dores have not made more than two errors in a game this season and have made no errors in eight games.
BLACK OUT ON SATURDAY
Saturday's game vs. LSU is a black out with fans encouraged to wear black to the game. The first 500 fans to the game on Saturday will receive black Vanderbilt baseball t-shirts. Also on Saturday, the first 250 fans will receive a Sonny Gray trading card as the first of five Commodores in the Majors to be commemorated this season. The Coca-Cola Kids Zone will make its 2014 debut on Saturday as well in Memorial Plaza. Following the game on Saturday, kids are invited on to the field to play catch with their mom and/or dad. Fans will enter the playing field through the right field gate.
Friday is Free Stuff Friday at Hawkins Field with the first 1500 fans receiving Vanderbilt Baseball gold wristbands. On Sunday, it's Mr. C's first Sunday Run Day with kids 12 and under running the bases after the game.
