Vanderbilt’s Jayson Gonzalez has been named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week after helping the Commodores to a pair of Top-15 wins, the league office announced Monday.
Gonzalez hit .364 with five RBIs in three games for the week. Making his return to California, the Covina, Calif., native posted a .462 on-base percentage en route to becoming the first Vandy player to earn an SEC weekly honor this season.
The third baseman belted a solo home run and accounted for all three of Vanderbilt’s RBIs on Wednesday at Long Beach State. He also scored a pair of runs and reached base twice in a 6-3 victory at No. 11 UCLA and drove in two runs in a 7-4 win against No. 8 TCU on Sunday.
Gonzalez becomes the first Commodore to receive freshman of the week honors since right-handed pitcher Drake Fellows did so on March 13, 2017. Gonzalez is joined by Kentucky’s Tom Squires – SEC Player of the Week – and Auburn’s Casey Mize – SEC Pitcher of the Week.
