Vanderbilt's ninth inning rally fell short Tuesday night at Belmont with a 6-5 loss to the Bruins. A fourth inning grand slam by the Bruins sunk the Commodores in the team's first loss to Belmont since 2009. Anthony Gomez had two hits and Tony Kemp had two RBI in the loss. The Commodores claimed the team's first series sweep of the season with a wild 12-8 win over Rhode Island Sunday. Spencer Navin capped off a huge weekend with four RBI, three runs scored and three hits, including is first career home run. Vanderbilt swept a doubleheader from Rhode Island with a 9-4 win and 8-0 win. Navin had three hits and Kevin Ziomek punched out nine in the first win. Drew VerHagen twirled eight shutout innings and Mike Yastrzemski smacked a two-run homer in the second victory. Louisiana Tech jumped on the Commodores early and never trailed in a 9-3 win over VU. Mike Yastrzemski belted his second home run of the season with a two-run shot.

Sophomore Tony Kemp enters the weekend on a nine-game hitting streak. During the streak Kemp is 11-for-36 (.306) with eight runs scored and has seven RBI, including six RBI since moving to the two-spot in the order over the weekend. Kemp's longest streak last season was 15 games in late April and early May. Fellow sophomore Conrad Gregor has reached base in nine straight games.
THE WEEKEND OF NAVIN
Sophomore catcher Spencer Navin enjoyed a huge weekend series against Rhode Island. The Des Moines, Iowa native went 7-for-13 (.539) with a pair of three-hit games, including a career day on Sunday when he went 3-for-6 with three runs scored, four RBI and his first career home run. He has at least one hit in each of his last eight starts going 12-for-27 (.444) and has reached base in every game he has started this season.
Eight Commodores have played in all 12 games this season with six earning starts in all 12 games. Anthony Gomez, Mike Yastrzemski, Tony Kemp, Conrad Gregor, Riley Reynolds and Connor Harrell have started all 12 games this season. Only four Commodores played in all 66 games a year ago with Gomez and Yastrzemski starting every game as sophomores along with the departed Jason Esposito and Aaron Westlake. Already early this season 13 different Commodores have earned at least one start compared to 15 all of last season.
TAMING THE TOREROS
Vanderbilt hosts San Diego for the first time this weekend. The two teams met last season in San Diego with the Dores winning all three games and hold an all-time advantage of three games to one. The Toreros boast preseason All-American Kris Bryant along with former first round pick Dylan Covey.
