Vanderbilt Game Notes
Vanderbilt edged Middle Tennessee State 4-3 Wednesday behind the relief pitching of John Kilichowski and Carson Fulmer, who turned in six scoreless innings. The Commodores shutout their third opponent of the season with a 4-0 victory over Tennessee Tech Tuesday. Walker Buehler and Hayden Stone, who fanned a career-best eight in three innings, combined on the shutout. Vanderbilt wrapped up the team's third straight series sweep to open 2014 with a 4-2 victory over Stanford on Sunday. The Dores rallied for two runs in the eighth to finish the sweep. Vandy clinched the series with a 5-1 win over Stanford on Saturday. Jared Miller picked up his third win with five-plus innings of work. The Commodores claimed the series opener vs. Stanford with a 4-1 win. Tyler Beede struck out six over seven innings for the win and Dansby Swanson hit his first career home run.

TOUGH TO HIT
The Commodores' pitching staff enters the week as the hardest pitching staff in the nation to hit allowing only 5.17 hits per nine innings to lead all of Division I baseball. Vanderbilt has allowed only 73 hits in 126 innings while allowing opponents to hit just .169. Tyler Beede ranks seventh in the nation and first in the SEC allowing only 2.5 hits per nine innings. The Commodores also rank seventh nationally in strikeouts per nine innings with 9.5 K/9 IP.
CAN'T LOSE TO ZERO
Vanderbilt tossed the team's third shutout of the season on Tuesday behind Walker Buehler and Hayden Stone. The Commodores' three shutout victories already match last season's total. Jared Miller and Carson Fulmer combined to pitch the team's first two blankings on the first two Saturdays of the season. The legendary 2011 pitching staff registered seven shutouts and the 2004 Vandy team holds the record with an amazing 10. This season the Dores have allowed three runs or less in 13 of the team's 14 games.
The Vanderbilt bullpen has been lights out for the Commodores allowing only three runs over 51.2 innings (0.52 ERA). Hayden Stone, Brian Miller and Adam Ravenelle have yet to allow a run while combining to pitch 24.2 innings. Carson Fulmer leads the team with four saves having worked having worked multiple innings in all four games.
EAGLES FLY INTO HAWKINS FIELD FOR FIRST TIME
The Commodordes face Winthrop for the first time in history this weekend. Winthrop is located in Rock Hill, S.C. and part of the Big South Conference.
PITCHING AND DEFENSE
The Commodores have been led by fantastic pitching so far this season that has been aided by rock-solid defense. The Dores enter the weekend as the best fielding team in the SEC with a .985 fielding percentage. Vanderbilt has made a league-low eight errors.
