Dores host Hawks this weekend
Feb. 22, 2013
Vanderbilt downed Central Arkansas 10-2 Wednesday afternoon at a chilly Hawkins Field. The Dores once again had a balanced offensive attack with eight players having at least one hit. Steven Rice earned the win with three perfect innings out of the bullpen. The Commodores picked up a dominate performance from starting pitcher Philip Pfeifer in a 9-3 win at Belmont Tuesday. Pfeifer punched out a career-best 10 Bruins to become the first Dores' hurler since 2011 to strike out at least 10 batters. Tony Kemp produced his second career five-hit game and the team's first since he did it in 2011 as a freshman.

Through the Commodores' first five games it appears juniors Tony Kemp and Conrad Gregor have swapped bodies. Gregor leads the team with five stolen bases while Kemp has swiped three bags to this point. Kemp is slugging .611 with a pair of doubles and Gregor has one extra-base hit. This trend is the complete opposite of the duo's careers and 2012 seasons when Kemp led the squad with 21 steals to Gregor's 10. Gregor led the team with 20 doubles and a .463 slugging-percentage to Kemp's 11 doubles and .392 slugging-percentage.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
The Commodores head into the team's second weekend series a much different team than a year ago. The 2012 Dores went into the second weekend series against Oregon 1-3 en route to a 1-7 start to the season. Through the first two weeks (seven games) last year Vanderbilt had been outscored 57-34 and was hitting just .230 as a team with a 6.60 team ERA. This year Vandy enters the second week of the season having outscored opponents 50-24, hitting .335 as a team with a 4.09 team ERA. VU did not score it's 50th run of the 2012 season until the team's 11th game. Senior Connor Harrell has been a huge contributor early on with 11 RBI and four extra-base hits.
Home Runs Translate to NCC Donations
Rio Grande Fence Co. has partnered with Vanderbilt athletics to provide a donation to the National Commodore Club for every Vanderbilt home run hit this season. So far, the Commodore have hit three home runs on the year.
