How the Mission Statement was Developed

During the summer of 2010, Vanderbilt season ticket holders, members of the National Commodore Club and the athletic staff itself were asked to suggest three words they believed best described what Vanderbilt Athletics represents and three words that would describe what Vanderbilt Athletics should strive to represent.

There were hundreds of responses and among the most popular words from multiple stakeholders were integrity, champions, excellence, sportsmanship, winning, student-athlete and character. Several of these descriptions along with the spirit of many others were then woven into our new Mission Statement by members of the Athletics Senior Management Team.
