Holding The Lead

Vanderbilt finished 9-under 275 in Round 2 of the Mason Rudolph Championship to take a 10-stroke lead into Sunday

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The No. 3-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team carded 9-under 275 during Round 2 of the 2024 Mason Rudolph Championship, as the Commodores extended their lead over the field to 10 strokes going into Sunday’s finale.

Juniors Gordon Sargent and Jackson Van Paris are in first and second, respectively, after 36 holes of play at Vanderbilt Legends Club. Sargent sits atop the player leaderboard at 9-under 133 after he carded 2-under 69 on Saturday. Meanwhile, Van Paris finished Round 2 at 4-under 67 to end the day in second place, just two strokes off Sargent’s total.

The Commodores have posted a two-round score of 17-under 551 at the 2024 Mason Rudolph Championship. Vanderbilt holds a 10-stroke lead over No. 5-ranked Ole Miss going into Round 3. The Dores head into Sunday looking to claim their fifth-straight Mason Rudolph title.

“I thought we did a lot of good things today,” said Vanderbilt men’s golf head coach Scott Limbaugh. “We made a lot of birdies and took care of the holes that we were supposed to take care of. I thought Jackson has looked calm and in control during both days. His first bogey of the tournament came on Hole 16 today. I’m super proud of him and the consistency he has played with this week. Gordon has hung in there really well and he is playing some really good golf.”

Vanderbilt had four golfers finish under par in Round 2 of the Mason Rudolph Championship, which allowed the Commodores to take a 10-stroke lead going into Round 3. In addition to Sargent’s and Van Paris’ performance, graduate student William Moll went 2-under 69 on Saturday, while senior Cole Sherwood carded 1-under 70. Graduate student Matthew Riedel carded even par for the second-straight round at the Mason Rudolph Championship, as he goes into Sunday in a tie for 11th sitting at even par through two rounds of play.

Wells Williams and John Broderick also ended Round 2 under par for the Vanderbilt ‘B’ team, which gave the Commodores a total of six golfers that carded under par on Saturday. Williams went 3-under 68 in the round to move into a tie for 11th going into Sunday, while Broderick ended the day at 1-under 70 and sits in a tie for 29th.

“Cole and Matthew haven’t quite gotten momentum this week,” added Limbaugh. “I would love to see them get some momentum tomorrow and keep it going. William was 2-over early today and he battled back finished at 2-under, and I’m proud of that. I want to say how proud I was of Wells Williams coming back after yesterday, he played a bogey-free round today. Also, I’m proud of John Broderick’s performance. I thought those guys played a little bit more to our standards today.”

The final round of the 2024 Mason Rudolph Championship gets underway Sunday at Vanderbilt Legends Club. The round begins at 7:30 a.m. from Hole 1. “Tomorrow is our final round of the regular season and we want to put our best foot forward,” said Limbaugh. “We certainly don’t expect these teams we’re playing against to trip and fall. We know what it takes to finish the regular season the right way before heading into championship season. Would love to see a lot of Black and Gold out at Vanderbilt Legends tomorrow.”
