Matthews to host charity game

July 2, 2018

NASHVILLE -- This Saturday, a host of former Vanderbilt stars will once again converge on campus for a good cause.

Organized by former Vanderbilt football player Jordan Matthews and his foundation, Matthews Mission, the university will host the Second Annual Vandy Legends Charity Game with a celebrity softball game at Hawkins Field. All proceeds benefit the YWCA and AMEND Together Nashville, bringing awareness to the issue of domestic violence in Tennessee.

Last summer, Matthews helped organize the Vandy Legends Charity Basketball Game at Memorial Gym, which also shed light on an issue that impacts women in all corners of society. Matthews said one in four women in the United States are victims of domestic violence, and that number jumps to three out of four females who are incarcerated.

"Imagine having a predator, somebody who is after you and trying to harm you, and that's somebody you've had emotions for in the past," Matthews said. "It's a very confusing situation that many women in Tennessee face. We understand women have been marginalized in our society. Let's support, love and show our women that we can make this nation a safer place for you and our daughters."

Matthews once again enlisted the help of former Vanderbilt greats in putting together his charity event. Former Commodore football players like Earl Bennett, Jay Cutler, Andre Hal, DJ Moore, Jordan Rodgers and Chris Williams are set to suit up for the game and team with stars from other sports, like former All-American tennis student-athlete Sydney Campbell and All-SEC basketball player Christina Foggie. The roster will split between Offensive Legends and Defensive Legends.

Matthews also invited "Real Heroes of Nashville" to participate on Saturday. That includes local police officers and firefighters, a nod to those who serve citizens of Middle Tennessee.

Gates will open Saturday at 4 p.m. CT with food trucks set up outside Hawkins Field. The game will begin with a home-run derby at 5 p.m. before a 6 p.m. first pitch. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids, but other donation opportunities are available.

Matthews said the goals of the Vandy Legends Charity Game are to have fun, raise awareness of an important issue and life up women in the state of Tennessee.

"Growing up, I was taught that you're either a protector or a predator," Matthews said. "Are you protective of women, are you there for the women in your life, or are you the type of guy who objectifies women? People in the Vanderbilt community, they see where the heart is with this, and the intention behind it. All these former Vandy players want to be behind this."
