Lori Alexander is an associate director of athletics. A native of Indiana, she came to Vanderbilt from the University of California, Berkeley in 1997 as a strength and conditioning coach and now sits on the department's senior management team, supervising the sports of men's and women's tennis, soccer and swimming in addition to all camps and championship events.
Last concert you attended?
Name a guilty pleasure.
Strength training (you can't ever take a strength coach out of the weight room!), hiking in the mountains, baking
What inspires you?
My mom. She raised four crazy kids that were very close in age back in the days when they didn't have disposable anything! She always gave us 100% of herself and took us on all kinds of neat adventures to help us learn new things. She taught us to believe in ourselves, respect others and that we could accomplish anything if we tried hard enough.
Best advice you've received?
I consider the following quotes good advice: "The man who makes no mistakes usually does not make anything" and "Life is a gift. Never take it for granted."
Favorite/memorable moment as a child?
Torturing my three brothers; ok, that was fun but favorite times were spent at our family lake house in the summer.
If you weren't in sports, what would you be doing?
I always wanted to join the Peace Corps.
What was your first job?
I started teaching gymnastics at a YMCA and private club when I was in high school.
Farthest you've been from home?
I traveled to South Africa with our men's and women's tennis teams in November of 2010. It was an absolutely amazing experience!
Can you cook? Best dish?
Yes! Desserts in general, cookies more specifically (family tradition)
Favorite childhood toy?
The monkey bars on any playground.
If you could have dinner with three people, who would you choose?
Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein, Gandhi
