Dores Travel to MTSU for Coach Bouldin Classic

Vanderbilt set to compete from Murfreesboro in annual fall tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt men’s tennis will be one of four schools competing Friday through Sunday in the Coach Bouldin Classic hosted by Middle Tennessee.

The Dores will be joined in Murfreesboro by the Blue Raiders, Indiana and Tennessee, with each team’s players competing individually and rotating opponents each day. Vanderbilt is set to face Tennessee tomorrow, Indiana on Saturday and MTSU on Sunday. Freshmen Donghyun Hwang and Cayden Wang, sophomore Callum Markowitz and senior Tighe Brunetti make up the four competing for the Dores throughout the event; it is the first competition of the fall for each. The teams will play two doubles matches ahead of four singles matches consisting of three full sets.

Brunetti played a key role in Vanderbilt’s most recent trip to MTSU last season. After securing the doubles point earlier in the match, the Dores eventually fell behind 3-2 with the Blue Raiders holding leads on the last two remaining courts. Vandy was able to even the score at 3-3 while Brunetti battled back at the No. 6 position. The Dore ultimately forced a third set tiebreaker, taking the final set 7-6 (2) to seal the Vanderbilt comeback victory.

The Coach Bouldin Classic is named after former MTSU men’s tennis head coach Granville “Buck” Bouldin, who led the program from 1965 to 1971 and served as a longtime volunteer assistant afterwards. Bouldin earned OVC Coach of the Year awards in 1965 and 1968; he was inducted into the Blue Raider Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. MTSU has hosted the event annually since Bouldin’s passing in 2023.
