Commodores Drop Home Match to Gators

Vanderbilt drops match against Gators on Friday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt women’s tennis picked up wins on several courts in singles, but it wasn’t enough as the Commodores fell to Florida 4-3 on Friday at the Ensworth Tennis Facility.

Trailing the Gators 1-0 going into singles, the Commodores (11-6, 6-4 SEC) picked up back-to-back singles wins on Courts 4 and 6, with Sonya Macavei and Holly Staff defeating their Gator opponents. The Dores still came up short however, dropping the match to Florida.

No. 119 Qavia Lopez clinched the match for the Gators when she defeated Amy Stevens on Court 5, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Just prior, Carly Briggs, ranked 86th, claimed the third point for Florida, overcoming Anessa Lee on Court 3, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Before that, Valeria Ray fell to No. 64 Sara Dahlstrom 6-3, 6-2, and No. 17 Celia-Belle Mohr defeated No. 13 Rachel Gailis in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles, Vanderbilt dropped matches on Courts 2 and 3, with No. 25 Mohr and Lee’s match going unfinished on Court 1. No. 69 Ray and Staff were defeated by Briggs and Qavia Lopez 6-2, alongside Macavei and Stevens who fell 6-1.
